Panoptica

Panoptica is an art installation about looking, being looked at, and the systems that increasingly operate between the two.

Cameras, webcams, security cameras, monitors, screens, mirrors, sound, cables and other devices form an environment that registers, follows, interprets and sometimes misunderstands the visitor.

Panoptica is therefore not only about surveillance. It asks a more fundamental question: who owns the gaze? What happens when a system does not merely look at you, but attempts to recognise you, classify you and assign meaning to what it sees?

Panoptica does not offer a simple argument for or against technology. Camera surveillance can be useful. AI can recognise an extraordinary amount. Both can also make mistakes, miss context or concentrate power in organisations that remain outside the frame.

The visitor therefore does not remain outside the work. The visitor becomes part of it.
